THE UNIQUE BENEFITS OF RETINYL PROPRIONATE
Retinyl Propionate is one of the lesser esters found normally in our bodies. It is not more or less active than the other forms of vitamin A but is the least irritating form of vitamin A and therefore more likely to be used above other forms of vitamin A. Retinyl Propionate is more stable because it does not absorb light and therefore does not get destroyed by light. Whereas, Retinyl Palmitate (about 90% of the esters in skin) absorbs UV light and as a result gets destroyed. That’s why we become depleted of vitamin A.
The Retinyl Propionate molecule is also smaller and lipid soluble so it penetrates more efficiently, even down to the dermis resulting in greater improvements to the skin. Studies have shown that it improved the barrier function of the skin, increased the GAGS (glycosaminoglycans) and hyaluronic acid and decreased wrinkles and lines around the eyes as well as reducing solar keratosis.
